Make the Most of Last-Minute, Late-Summer RV Escapes

The heat isn’t mellowing out here in Florida just yet, but the kids are back in school. And it can feel like summer is completely over but if you find yourself yearning for one last hurrah—a late-summer RV adventure–don’t give up on the dream! It’s not too late to plan a spontaneous getaway. In fact, we’ve mapped out a few savvy tips for orchestrating a fantastic, impromptu escape.

Choose a Final Destination Close to Home

Picture this: You wake up, stretch, and decide, “Today, we hit the road!” To make that whimsical notion a reality, aim for campgrounds or boondocking spots within a day’s drive from your doorstep. Why? Because less time on the road means more time with your toes in the grass (or sand) and more time to relax. Seek out quieter destinations or stay in areas you’ve never camped before. Just keep it close to home.

Choose Off-the-Beaten-Path Locations

Fancy RV resorts and family campgrounds might be fully booked, especially during Labor Day weekend, when everyone’s chasing that final summer hurrah. But an RV adventure can come in many forms. And the more you’re willing to trade hookups for solitude, the more likely you’ll snag that perfect spot. Consider boondocking at a nearby Harvest Host location or embrace the wild side and camp on open land where dry camping is allowed. National parks and forests often hold secret pockets of tranquility.

Creatively Arrange Your Vacation Days

If your work schedule allows, play with flexible dates. Maybe slip away just before the weekend or extend your trip into the following week. Weekends tend to be the busiest for campgrounds, so if you can work in a few weekdays for your spontaneous rendezvous, you may find just the right campsite–and maybe even score a sweet deal to boot.

Be Persistent and Claim Your Late-Summer Adventure

Don’t think that finding a suitable campsite is a fool’s errand this late in the summer. It’s not, and the last thing you should do is give up looking! For starters, search online reservation systems and keep tabs on availability at your dream campgrounds or secret hideaways. Don’t forget that other campers might change their plans and cancel their trips, freeing up a spot just for you. Plus, you also have access to Scan & Pay, an incredible feature on the Recreation.gov mobile app. Scan & Pay allows you to arrive at and reserve an open campsite on the same day, even if mobile reception is terrible in the area. To see a list of participating locations, be sure to download the Recreation.gov mobile app.
