How to Keep Bugs at Bay While RV Camping
Camping in the summer is a time to slow down and savor the joys of family and nature. But nothing can ruin that tranquility faster than a swarm of mosquitoes buzzing around your head and biting you as you try to unwind by the campfire.
Of course, bugs are an inevitable part of outdoor life, and we’re always going to be outnumbered. However, you don’t have to let them take over your RV camping trip. Here are some strategies to help you fend off those pesky critters, even if only temporarily.
Choose Your Campsite Wisely
Mosquitoes thrive in standing water, such as marshes and ponds, and bugs love to hide in dense brush and tall grass. To minimize your encounters with these pests, pick a campsite that’s away from water sources and heavy vegetation. A little extra distance can make a big difference in your comfort level!
Dress to Protect
While it’s tempting to lounge around in shorts and T-shirts during warm weather, minimal clothing leaves you exposed to and at risk for insect bites. When bugs are most active, such as during evening hours, opt for long-sleeve shirts and pants. This simple approach—which is also great to follow when hiking—can significantly reduce the number of bites you get.
Maintain Your Screens
Your RV’s window and vent screens are your first line of defense against bugs. Check for any holes or tears in screens and repair or replace them as needed. If your RV doesn’t have a screen door, consider installing a magnetic screen door. Keeping your screens in good condition allows you to enjoy the fresh air without inviting bugs inside.
Use Bug Repellent
Bug repellent is a must-have for any camping trip. There are various types available, including sprays and wipes. According to a study by the Journal of Insect Science, repellents containing DEET are the most effective. However, repellents with 30 percent lemon eucalyptus oil can also be quite effective. Find what works best for you and keep it handy.
