Essential Tips for Keeping Your RV’s AC Cool

Schools are back in session in some parts of the country and summer is sadly coming to close. But that doesn’t mean that the heat is letting up. And if summer camping is still on your agenda, it’s important to keep your RV’s air conditioner in tip-top shape–a malfunctioning AC can turn your cozy home on wheels into a sweltering sauna, and trust us, you don’t want to deal with that.

So, here are a few easy tips for maintaining your RV’s air conditioner in these last dog days of summer:

Get Your RV AC Serviced Regularly

Your rig deserves a little pampering, just like you do after a long day of driving. So twice a year, bring your rig to a certified service technician. They’ll give your AC the once-over, tighten loose bolts, and make sure everything’s working properly. This will help your AC provide frosty blasts of cool air as intended.

Clean the Filter Often

Your AC filters help to trap dust, pollen, and who-knows-what-else. The result when the filters clog up? Your AC’s performance suffers, and it uses more energy than normal, which can put unnecessary stress on the unit and cause it to burn out faster. So, show your filters some love. Regularly clean or replace them (depending on your AC model), and it will help your rig’s AC “breathe” easier.

Head to the Roof and Check the Cover and Evaporator Coils

Yes, it’s time to climb up on the roof (be sure to have a spotter with you!) and check two things: the AC cover shroud and the evaporator coils. The shroud is like your AC’s superhero cape—it protects it from rain, hail, and curious critters. Make sure it’s securely fastened. As for the coils, they’re the unsung heroes behind the scenes. If they’re bent or damaged, your AC’s efficiency can drop drastically. To prevent unnecessary damage to the cover and coils, avoid parking under tree branches and cover the unit when your RV’s not in use.
