4 Hacks for Cozy Cold-Weather RV Camping

As winter blankets much of the northern U.S. and cooler temperatures entice people outside in the southern U.S., the allure of cold-weather RV camping can become irresistible. Crisp air and snow-covered landscapes may add a magical appeal, but staying warm and comfortable is paramount.

Here are four hacks that promise to make your cold-weather RV camping experience not just bearable but downright enjoyable.

1. Strategically Position Your RV

Cold temperatures and biting winds often go hand in hand. To counteract the chilling effects of the wind, consider the strategic positioning of your RV. Park your rig with the head or rear facing into the wind to limit the exposed surface area to the chilly gusts, while minimizing side-to-side motion. This not only helps stabilize your RV but also creates a barrier against the cold, keeping the interior warmer and more inviting.

2. Heat Your Bed for Bedtime Bliss

A cold bed can make for an unbearable night’s sleep during winter camping. But electric blankets can help in this scenario, preheating your bed to a comfortable temperature before you slip under the covers. If you prefer to conserve electricity or are camping off-grid, a hot water bottle provides an effective solution. Simply fill an insulated, rubber hot water bottle with warm (not boiling) water and place it between your sheets a few minutes before bedtime. You’ll drift off into a restful slumber, even on the coldest nights.

3. Use Rugs as Extra Insulation

Whether your RV has carpeted floors or not, adding rugs strategically throughout the space will help trap and retain heat. Thick, plush rugs act as a barrier against the cold, preventing it from seeping through the floor and making your RV feel warmer overall. Rugs not only enhance insulation, but they also can add a touch of comfort to your living space, making it a win-win for both style and practicality.

4. Combat Moisture with a Dehumidifier

When it’s really cold, you might use your RV’s furnace or a space heater to heat up your rig, but this can inadvertently elevate humidity levels. Unfortunately, excessive moisture poses the risk of mold and mildew growth. Enter the dehumidifier—a silent hero in the battle against winter dampness! Invest in a quality, space-friendly dehumidifier and run it at the same time as your furnace (ideally when you’re connected to shore power) to keep excess moisture at bay and ensure a dry and comfortable atmosphere.
